Why this project matters
Communities and organisations rely heavily on mobile phones and internet services. During disruption, at difficult sites or in temporary operations, those systems may be limited, congested or unavailable. UKRCS is being created to explore a practical additional layer: trained volunteers using the best lawful and appropriate communications technology for the situation.
The first goal is Unit 001—a small founding team with documented procedures, core equipment and enough training to exercise safely before any claim of operational readiness is made.
What success looks like
- A core group of trained Communications Operators and Team Leaders
- Portable radio, networking and incident IT equipment
- Independent connectivity and resilient field power options
- Governance, safeguarding, safety and information-handling procedures
- A documented exercise demonstrating strengths, gaps and next steps
